Free Behavioral Support for Canadians Living with Obesity
This World Obesity Day, we're launching something new in Canada.
The EAP - Equitable Access Program for Canadians Living with Obesity.
A free behavioral support program that any Canadian can access - either through their clinic or directly on their own.
No app. No downloads. No complicated platforms.
Just evidence-based support delivered through simple messaging (SMS/WhatsApp).
Because even in one of the most advanced obesity care environments in the world, many patients are still being left to figure things out on their own.
Why "Equitable Access" Matters in Canada
Canada prides itself on universal healthcare. But when it comes to obesity care, access is anything but equal.
Some patients live near specialized clinics or clinicians with expertise in obesity medicine - and even those clinics are struggling to support patients the way they deserve. Many others, especially in smaller communities, simply do not have access to structured behavioral support at all.
So where do people turn?
Social media. Apps that promise to help - Noom, WW, MyFitnessPal.
These tools rarely explain why obesity is a chronic disease. They do not help people understand what is happening biologically when progress slows. They do not address internalized weight bias, help navigate medication side effects, or involve the healthcare practitioner responsible for care. In short, they do not build self-efficacy for long-term chronic disease management.
What is the first thing they usually do? Ask your current weight, ask for your goal weight, and draw a straight line between the two.
Anyone who works in obesity medicine knows it does not work like that.
As obesity clinicians, we know where the real gaps in personalized care are and how to address them. Together with the technology team at nymble, we've been working on how to scale that support so it can reach people everywhere.
Because equitable access means your postal code should not determine whether you receive support for a chronic disease.
Everyone has a smartphone. Everyone messages.
Equitable access means support that is:
- available in multiple languages
- accessible without learning a new app or platform
- culturally aware of your foods and traditions
- personalized to your health goals and treatment plan
Support that actually meets people where they are.
Canada Has the Science - But Not Always the Support
Canada helped change the global conversation about obesity.
Through the Obesity Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines, we reframed obesity as a chronic disease, not a failure of willpower. We acknowledged the role of biology, genetics, hormones, and environment.
But there is still a gap between the science and the real-world patient experience.
People start GLP-1 medications with very little behavioral scaffolding.
Side effects happen and there is no one to ask in the moment.
Normal appetite changes get interpreted as "failure."
And quietly, many people stop treatment.
Not because the medications do not work - but because the support infrastructure has not kept up with the science.
Introducing the EAP Program
The Equitable Access Program (EAP) provides structured behavioral support for Canadian adults living with obesity.
It is designed by clinicians and obesity experts and delivered through simple messaging technology - meeting people where they already are: their phone.
The program is built around your first six weeks with nymble, a structured but flexible journey designed around your goals, your medication, and your life. Support can continue indefinitely if desired.
Your First 6 Weeks with nymble
Week 1 - Getting Started
We learn about you - your goals, your medication, your daily life. You receive your first nymble score, a snapshot of where you are right now, and you can set personalized reminders.
Week 2 - Building Foundations
We start building knowledge together: why things may not have worked in the past, what makes obesity a chronic disease, and what can make this time different.
Week 3 - Going Deeper
Your nymble score updates. We explore patterns around eating, movement, and wellbeing. If medication is part of your journey, we help navigate questions and side effects.
Week 4 - Finding Your Rhythm
By now you are getting into a groove. nymble adapts with new insights, new content, and small challenges designed around your progress.
Week 5 - Consolidating Progress
We help you recognize how far you've come and prepare for what comes next - turning everyday goals into long-term habits.
Week 6 - Your Journey Continues
Your latest nymble score reflects your progress. From here, you can continue with ongoing support, or keep nymble available whenever questions come up.
The first six weeks are completely free for Canadians through the EAP program.
The nymble Score
Your nymble score is a personalized snapshot of your progress.
It is not about weight. And it is not a grade.
Across more than 15,000 interactions, we built a score that predicts long-term success: engagement, consistency, learning, and behaviour change. It is a self-efficacy surrogate.
Your score updates at key points during the program, with short insights explaining what changed and what to focus on next.
Think of it less like a test and more like a compass.
Support That's Actually There When You Need It
With nymble, everything happens right in your messages.
- Reminders for medications, workouts, and snack timing if and when you want them
- 24/7 support when questions or worries come up
- Trusted information grounded in obesity guidelines and monitored by clinical experts
- Progress tracking through your evolving nymble score
No apps. No waiting rooms. No judgment. Just support.
Because Canadians Deserve Better
Less than 5% of people living with chronic disease receive structured behavioral therapy.
At the same time, persistence on obesity medications drops dramatically when patients are unsupported.
And yet behavioral care is still treated like an optional extra.
It should not be.
Obesity is a complex chronic disease. Patients deserve guidance that reflects that complexity - not just a prescription and a "good luck."
If Not Canada, Then Who?
Canada helped change the global conversation about obesity. Through clinical guidelines and research leadership, we helped establish obesity as a chronic disease that deserves long-term, evidence-based care. But changing the science is only part of the job. The next challenge is figuring out how to actually deliver that care to people, everywhere.
So this World Obesity Day, we're starting here.
Built by a team that understands the science of obesity, the realities of patient care, and the possibilities of modern technology, the Equitable Access Program is designed to make high-quality behavioral support available to Canadians no matter where they live.
If not Canada... then who?
If not now... when?
